REMOTE WORK MEETS VIDEO GAME WORLD-BUILDING.
This exploratory capstone studio, completed during the covid-19 pandemic, focused on new architectural archetypes for companies employing exclusively remote designers. the behaviors of building users track alongside those of open-world video games.
The headquarters archetype is based on remote designers visiting the site to
(a) gather supplies,
(b) complete pre-assigned tasks, and
(c) discover new tools and resources to help them complete their project.
The building itself is gamified and designed to be used both as a physical space and virtual enrivonment. with independent controls for each room, progress check-ins, project tracking, interactive controls for users to modify their space, and open-world style integration of the landscape, designers are able to modify the environment based on their creative needs.
PLANNING + ANALYSIS
THE SITE
WATERSHEDS + WAREHOUSES.
The distressed waterfront site is rehabilitated with native plants, trees, and new bioswales to treat runoff before it reaches the river. softscape is added for outdoor work- and playspace. the chosen case study company is a product design and experiential branding firm. the building is established on an exurban waterfront site in Hood River, OR. the way labor is gamified in the design field and “gig economy”, due to an increased reliance on and access to virtual workplace tools, is explored formally.
THE STRUCTURE
MODULAR UNITS + EXTERNALIZED STRUCTURES
A multi-story, walkable truss system stitches together each building, creating semi-outdoor workspace, display space, an exercise track, and multiple rooftop lounges.
